Responding to Tornado in Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Samaritan?s Purse is responding to a tornado that swept through the Hattiesburg, Mississippi, area on Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of homes were damaged and many homeowners are in need of assistance.

A Disaster Relief Unit is based at Petal Harvey Baptist Church in Petal, Mississippi, just outside Hattiesburg. Volunteers will begin helping storm victims by cutting up and removing downed trees, clearing debris, and tarping damaged roofs.

RESPONDING IN GEORGIA: Samaritan's Purse is helping tornado victims in Calhoun, Georgia.

The tornado that tore through Hattiesburg was part of a severe storm that caused significant damage to buildings, toppled trees, and injured at least 60 people.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said it appears a single tornado caused the damage in Forrest, Marion. and Lamar counties. Hundreds of homes are damaged in Forrest County, where Samaritan's Purse is based.

The tornado had maximum wind speeds of up to 145 mph, and was rated an EF-3 on the tornado intensity scale, according to the National Weather Service.
