The U.S. Coast Guard said no more than 28 gallons of oil spilled in Friday's Gulf of Mexico accident involving a platform owned by Houston's Black Elk Energy.
The U.S. Coast Guard said there is some report of an oil sheen from an explosion on a Black Elk Energy platform in the Gulf of Mexico, but it isn?t expected to release more than 28 gallons of oil.
Black Elk Energy President and CEO John Hoffman confirmed on Friday an oil and gas platform that exploded off the coast of Louisiana, about 20 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La., belongs to the Houston-based company.
Hoffman said a construction crew was finishing work on a water skimmer when it appears that the wrong line was cut, which resulted in the explosion and fire. A water skimmer is a device that separates water from oil.
The platform is a shallow water operation in the West Delta Block 32 of the Gulf of Mexico.
Twenty-six workers were on the platform when the explosion occurred close to 9 a.m. and a fire erupted, a Coast Guard spokesman said. The fire has been extinguished. Nine people were airlifted to the hospital, and two people remain missing. No deaths had been confirmed early Friday afternoon.
