Meningitis outbreak toll: 137 cases, 12 deaths

An outbreak of fungal meningitis has been linked to steroid shots for back pain. The medication, made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts, has been recalled.

Latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Illnesses: 137

Deaths: 12

States: 10; Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

ComScore: Google's Search Engine Market Share Increased In ...

ComScore just published its latest U.S. search market numbers and things aren?t looking too good for Yahoo. Yahoo?s Bing-powered search lost another 0.6 percentage points and now has just 12.2 percent of the market. That?s down from 12.8 percent in August and 13 percent in July and June.

The networks that apparently profited from Yahoo?s dip are Google, which added another 0.3 percentage points and Ask, which is also up 0.3 percentage points. With this, Google now commands 66.7 percent of the U.S. search market and Ask 3.5 percent.

Microsoft?s Bing held steady last month at 15.9 percent in comScore?s rankings. In total, comScore reports, Bing powered just over a quarter (25.1 percent) of all U.S. searches in September.

TechCrunch parent company AOL is still the smallest of comScore?s top 5 search engines and came in at 1.8 percent last month, up 0.1 percentage points from August.

As far as total search volume goes, comScore says about 16.3 billion searches were conducted in September. That?s down about 4 percent from last month. Unsurprisingly, Yahoo also saw the largest drop here. The total number of searches on the site decreased by 9 percent.

Yahoo?s Troubles Continue

So far, Yahoo?s new CEO Marissa Mayer hasn?t announced any changes to the company?s strategy in the search market. If Yahoo wants to stay relevant in this business, though, Mayer will have to make some changes and do so sooner rather than later. Search brings in about a third of Yahoo?s revenue, and given Mayer?s background in search, she will likely institute some changes soon. For the time being, though, her focus seems to be more on PB&J than on improving Yahoo?s search.

October is known to many as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but few are aware that it is also National Physical Therapy Month. Since 2005, Shape Magazine has partnered with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation? (BCRF) in an effort to raise awareness and funds for life-saving breast cancer research by producing Pilates for Pink. This year, the American Physical Therapy Association has decided to focus NPTM on sports injury prevention across the lifespan.

All who attend will receive a gift bag filled with goodies from Justin?s Nut Butter, Vita Coco and Bumble Bar as a thank you for the suggested donation of $10 or more.

Kristen M. Reynolds, DPT, CPT
Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Pilates Teacher

Kristen Reynolds earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science from James Madison University in 2006 and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2009.

While practicing in orthopedics and sports medicine, a mentor introduced her to the Pilates Method and she has since pursued comprehensive certification to compliment her clinical interests. She has studied with Balanced Body, Peak Pilates, and most recently Balancepoint Pilates. She is an active member of the Pilates Method Alliance, American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Sections, as well as the APTA of Massachusetts Shoulder and Manual Physical Therapy Special Interest Groups.

Always interested in sports and fitness, she is a former YMCA and Junior Olympic gymnast, coach, and ACE personal trainer. Integrating the Pilates principles and Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair repertoire into her physical therapy practice has produced successful rehabilitation outcomes for a wide variety of patients, including adolescents, elite athletes and dancers, and individuals with chronic orthopedic conditions. Kristen utilizes this alternative therapeutic approach to improve muscle performance and joint mobility, correct posture and alignment, enhance body awareness, and create an evenly conditioned body that is more resilient to extremity and spinal injury. She greatly enjoys designing programs to target personal goals, educating clients to incorporate Pilates into their daily activities, and teaching small group classes.

Tom Hanks to make his Broadway debut next year

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tom Hanks will play a gutsy New York City newspaper columnist when he makes his debut on Broadway in the spring.

Producers of Nora Ephron's play "Lucky Guy" announced Thursday that Hanks will play Mike McAlary in the stage biography. Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, had been in negotiations for the role when Ephron died this summer.

Previews begin March 1 at the Broadhurst Theatre and an opening night is set for April 1.

McAlary, the city's one-time dominant tabloid reporter, got the first interview with Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was sodomized and beaten by white police officers at a station house in 1997. McAlary would win the Pulitzer Prize the next year but would die of cancer a few months later at age 41.

The director of "Lucky Guy" will be George C. Wolfe.

In June, lead producer Colin Callender said his team could "think of no more fitting tribute to her extraordinary writing and remarkable body of work" than to proceed with plans to produce Ephron's play.

Hanks is the star of such films as "Splash," ''Forrest Gump," ''Philadelphia," ''Sleepless in Seattle," ''Apollo 13" and "Saving Private Ryan."

Ephron, who died June 26 at age 71, gained recognition as the writer of films such as "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," which starred Hanks.

McAlary, who worked at both the New York Daily News and The New York Post, has already been the subject of a play ? Dan Klores' "The Wood," which opened off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre last year. He was said to be the inspiration for the character played by Randy Quaid in Ron Howard's "The Paper."
