Finnish Lessons Week | Profit of Education

I?ve a book recommendation for you. Read Pasi Sahlberg?s Finnish Lessons. As you probably know, Finland?s schools are often considered the world?s best. Not all that long ago, Finnish schools were not at all so good. Sahlberg tells the story of how Finland moved to the front of the pack. And then he tells us quite a bit about how Finland arranges schools today and how Finland ends up with some of the world?s best teachers. Finnish Lessons is also eminently readable. (You?ll even pick up a couple of Finnish jokes.) To buy a copy, visit www.FinnishLessons.com or Sahlberg?s website at http://www.pasisahlberg.com/. Or drop by Sahlberg?s blog.

Since I?m happily America-centric, my interest is in what we here in the States can learn from?Finnish Lessons.?Wednesday?s post will focus on Sahlberg?s contrast of American educational reform versus what the Finn?s have done. Friday I?ll raise some cautions about how we in America apply the lessons from Finland.

As a teaser, here are two facts about Finland.

  • The Finns don?t like standardized tests and make very little use of them. They especially stay away from high-stakes standardized tests.
  • The Finns lead the world in performance on standardized tests.

No Comments - Alliance of Progressive Labor

The Alliance of Progressive Labor joins the Filipino people, especially the Bangsamoros in Mindanao, in welcoming, although guardedly, the historic signing today of the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro between the Philippine government (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

While the peace deal by itself will not automatically and fully end the ?Moro problem,? as admitted by MILF chair Murad Ebrahim himself, it is already a momentous step forward in achieving a lasting peace and justice in Mindanao. After nearly 16 years of arduous and protracted negotiations, the GPH-MILF pact promises a much brighter hope to end the relentless armed conflict in southern Philippines that has killed over 120,000 people since the 1970s and has further pushed that region into the quagmire of injustice, poverty and underdevelopment.

In fact, the struggles for self-determination of the Moros and other indigenous peoples, like the lumads, in the place we now call Mindanao, started in the 15th century with the advent of Spanish colonialism. Centuries of foreign occupation of the entire country, including bloody attempts to subdue the indomitable Moros, went on with the American imperialism and the Japanese interlude. But the political and social changes that ensued have failed to address the Moro self-rule aspirations as well as to equitably distribute the riches of the area?s vast natural resources to the majority, especially the Moro masses. Transnational corporations and national and local elites have lorded over the impoverished peoples of Mindanao until now.

While lauding this peace initiative, the APL views it with cautious optimism as today?s ceremonies in Malaca?ang is only one of the series of steps to reach a final peace accord, which the Aquino administration is reportedly hoping to get done by 2016, when Aquino?s six-year term ends. After the signing, Aquino will issue an Executive Order establishing a 15-member Transition Commission (TC) ? eight chosen by the MILF; seven selected by the GPH ? which will draft the ?Bangsamoro Basic Law.? The draft will be sent to Congress for approval and followed by its signing by Aquino. A plebiscite and later an election for the Bangsamoro officials will then be held in the proposed Bangsamoro territory. This new entity will subsequently replace the current Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Indeed, this peace roadmap has a long and complex process and filled with uncertainties ? but still worth trying.

We could only hope for the best considering the lessons gained from ?peace pacts? forged in Mindanao in the past 40 years ? the 1976 Tripoli Agreement between the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Marcos dictatorship; the Jeddah Accord of 1987 between the MNLF and the Cory Aquino government, which spawned the ARMM; the 1996 Final Peace Agreement between the MNLF and the Ramos administration; and even the botched Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) between the MILF and the Arroyo regime in 2008.

The APL wishes to reiterate that for the peace talk to be effective and sustainable, it must be transparent and democratic, especially by holding comprehensive ? not selective and sham ? consultations with all the stakeholders. Hence, while recognizing the MILF?s leading role in this initiative, other non-MILF elements ? MNLF factions, non-MILF Muslims, the Lumads or ethnic communities, the Christian inhabitants, as well as the region?s organized ranks or the civil society, which includes the trade unions ? must be provided active roles in the peace process and the rebuilding of the Bangsamoro into a zone of justice, peace and progress.

Tigers have slight edge

You can?t predict baseball, but you can at least lay out the parameters. So let?s take a look at what the Tigers and Yankees have in store for us in the American League Championship Series.

The Teams

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

The Matchups

Game 1?Saturday in New York: Doug Fister vs. Andy Pettitte
Game 2?Sunday in New York: Anibal Sanchez vs. Undecided
Game 3?Tuesday in Detroit: Undecided vs. Justin Verlander
Game 4 Wednesday in Detroit: Undecided vs. Max Scherzer
Game 5?(if necessary) Thursday in Detroit
Game 6 (if necessary) next Saturday in New York
Game 7 (if necessary) next Sunday in New York

Analysis: The Tigers already have their rotation mapped out for the entire series, but there?s still quite a bit of uncertainty for the Yankees. Will Hiroki Kuroda go on short rest in Game 2 or will we see David Phelps? If it?s Phelps, you have to like the Tigers? chances of leaving New York with at least one win.

Because he was needed in Game 5 of the ALDS yesterday, CC Sabathia would have to go on short rest in Game 3 in order to match up against Justin Verlander. This would set them up to duel again in a potential Game 7. That would be pretty fun. It?s interesting that the Tigers are prepared to give two starts to Anibal Sanchez in the series as opposed to one for Max Scherzer. Sanchez has been solid for nearly two months now, so that?s no slight on him, but perhaps Jim Leyland decided to give Scherzer?s shoulder some extra recovery time.

The Storylines

  • The Yankees took the season series 6-4 while outscoring the Tigers 58-48.
  • The Yankees won?t have C.C. Sabathia in Game 1, but Andy Pettitte is a pretty good alternative. After all, the 40-year-old left-hander has started more postseason games than anyone. He allowed three runs over seven innings in a loss to the Orioles in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.
  • What will almost certainly command the most attention is the continuing saga of Alex Rodriguez. How much will he play? Joe Girardi opted to use Eric Chavez against Jason Hammel yesterday because of his numbers against right-handed pitching. Meanwhile, the Tigers? projected rotation is full of right-handed starters. My guess is that A-Rod will start Game 1 tonight, but he could continue to sit in certain matchups.
  • Justin Verlander had a 5.57 ERA in eight career postseason starts before dominating the Athletics to the tune of a 0.56 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 16 innings during the ALDS. Is this finally his time to shine on the big stage?
  • If the Yankees get two starts out of CC Sabathia during this series, one of them will have to be on short rest. They can either use him on regular rest in Game 4, setting him up for a start on three days? rest in a potential Game 7 or have him go on short rest in Game 3 and regular rest in a potential Game 7.
  • Will the Yankees offense show up? They managed to outlast the Orioles in the ALDS despite hitting just .211 as a team while scoring 16 runs in five games. Derek Jeter had more hits (eight) than Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano combined (six). It?s unrealistic to think that everyone will get hot at the same time, but this lineup is too talented to be this bad. Right?
  • Likewise, the Tigers held off the surprising Athletics in the ALDS without a ton of help from their big bats. Austin Jackson was 5-for-20 (.250) with seven strikeouts while Miguel Cabrera went 5-for-20 (.250) with two doubles and an RBI and Prince Fielder went 4-for-21 (.190) with one home run and two RBI. Their lineup isn?t nearly as deep or scary as the Yankees, so they need contributions from this important trio in order to advance.
  • Jose Valverde and Joaquin Benoit combined to give up five runs over 4 2/3 innings against the Athletics. Meanwhile, the Yankees bullpen held the Orioles to just one run over 11 1/3 innings for the entire series. The Tigers? bullpen was a concern even before the ALDS, so you have to give the Yankees the edge in the late innings.

Prediction

You have to like that the Yankees have the home-field advantage, especially considering the Tigers were not a very good road team during the regular season, but I?m just not a fan of how New York?s rotation lines up for this series. Meanwhile, the Tigers will be well-rested. They are also the younger team and seemingly healthier, too. Jose Valverde might make this pick look silly if he proves to be an adventure in the late innings, but I think they will take it.

CSN: Tebow praying for ailing Indy coach Pagano

kristianrdyer , theJetsBlog.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? On paper this week, the Jets are probably a much better team than the Colts side they will welcome to MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The same advantage could probably have been said of the Packers last weekend before they were upset by an emotionally driven Colts team.

Playing for their head coach Chuck Pagano, currently receiving treatment for leukemia, Indianapolis overcame a halftime deficit for 30-27 win over Green Bay in a game where the Colts were spurred on to play for Pagano. The ?Chuck Strong? movement has spread throughout the NFL and college football and now the Colts are hoping to ride the wave of emotions to a big road win this weekend against the 2-3 Jets.

For Jets Wildcat quarterback Tim Tebow, emotion is a part of the game. Dating back to his collegiate exploits at Florida, Tebow was known for his primal emotions on the field and a fiery passion that would lift his teammates. He sees the same thing in the Colts win last Sunday.

?I mean, I really believe football is so much about momentum and spark and enthusiasm. Gosh, when you have that momentum in a game, leading up to a game ? something to believe in ? gosh ? I really just think it makes you play harder, play more physical. You?re believing in something ? our league is so close. The difference between wins and losses is a play here, a missed blocked here, a missed tackle here, one more pass,? Tebow said. ?When you have something guys are fighting for, guys are believing in, it can make the difference.?

When asked if he?s praying for Pagano, Tebow said ?Absolutely I have.?

But Tebow countered that while the Colts might have an emotional edge given the health and battle their coach is currently going through, the Jets also have their own emotions to deal with. There is plenty of motivation for this team, especially since they?ve lost two straight and badly need a win against the Colts to resurrect a season beset by injuries and tough losses.

?A lot of our thoughts and prayers go out to their coach. First and foremost, that?s more important than winning a football game, I want that to be clear,? Tebow said. ?But when we step out on the football field, I think we have a lot to play for and we take a lot of pride in how we play. We have to believe in each other and have the same will to win that they have.?

In terms of playing for a purpose, Tebow said he really doesn?t have one other than the obvious. It isn?t his overt Christian faith or any one of the children he hosts after a game that spurs him on; just the 52 other players in the Jets locker room looking for a win.

?A lot of times it can be the same: something off the field for a kid, for a family, outside. I know so many guys take pride in playing for their kids or family or mom or something like that so that?s obviously a lot of added motivation,? Tebow said. ?At the same time, playing for your teammates and coaches means a lot as well.?

'Invisibility' could be a key to better electronics: Visual 'cloaking' technology enables more efficient transfer of electrons

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? A new approach that allows objects to become "invisible" has now been applied to an entirely different area: letting particles "hide" from passing electrons, which could lead to more efficient thermoelectric devices and new kinds of electronics.

The concept -- developed by MIT graduate student Bolin Liao, former postdoc Mona Zebarjadi (now an assistant professor at Rutgers University), research scientist Keivan Esfarjani, and mechanical engineering professor Gang Chen -- is described in a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Normally, electrons travel through a material in a way that is similar to the motion of electromagnetic waves, including light; their behavior can be described by wave equations. That led the MIT researchers to the idea of harnessing the cloaking mechanisms developed to shield objects from view -- but applying it to the movement of electrons, which is key to electronic and thermoelectric devices.

Previous work on cloaking objects from view has relied on so-called metamaterials made of artificial materials with unusual properties. The composite structures used for cloaking cause light beams to bend around an object and then meet on the other side, resuming their original path -- making the object appear invisible.

"We were inspired by this idea," says Chen, the Carl Richard Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering at MIT, who decided to study how it might apply to electrons instead of light. But in the new electron-cloaking material developed by Chen and his colleagues, the process is slightly different.

The MIT researchers modeled nanoparticles with a core of one material and a shell of another. But in this case, rather than bending around the object, the electrons do actually pass through the particles: Their paths are bent first one way, then back again, so they return to the same trajectory they began with.

In computer simulations, the concept appears to work, Liao says. Now, the team will try to build actual devices to see whether they perform as expected. "This was a first step, a theoretical proposal," Liao says. "We want to carry on further research on how to make some real devices out of this strategy."

While the initial concept was developed using particles embedded in a normal semiconductor substrate, the MIT researchers would like to see if the results can be replicated with other materials, such as two-dimensional sheets of graphene, which might offer interesting additional properties.

The MIT researchers' initial impetus was to optimize the materials used in thermoelectric devices, which produce an electrical current from a temperature gradient. Such devices require a combination of characteristics that are hard to obtain: high electrical conductivity (so the generated current can flow freely), but low thermal conductivity (to maintain a temperature gradient). But the two types of conductivity tend to coexist, so few materials offer these contradictory characteristics. The team's simulations show this electron-cloaking material could meet these requirements unusually well.

The simulations used particles a few nanometers in size, matching the wavelength of flowing electrons and improving the flow of electrons at particular energy levels by orders of magnitude compared to traditional doping strategies. This might lead to more efficient filters or sensors, the researchers say. As the components on computer chips get smaller, Chen says, "we have to come up with strategies to control electron transport," and this might be one useful approach.

The concept could also lead to a new kind of switches for electronic devices, Chen says. The switch could operate by toggling between transparent and opaque to electrons, thus turning a flow of them on and off. "We're really just at the beginning," he says. "We're not sure how far this is going to go yet, but there is some potential" for significant applications.

Xiang Zhang, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley who was not involved in this research, says "this is very exciting work" that expands the concept of cloaking to the domain of electrons. The authors, he says, "uncovered a very interesting approach that may be very useful to thermoelectric applications."

This research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through MIT's Solid-State Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion center, a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center.

Discipline's Reward: The Power of Rebalancing | Inside Investing

The first three quarters of 2012 have been marked by handsome increases in stock prices, modest rises in bond and commodity prices, and generally declining stock market volatility. While these are welcome developments, investors should not get complacent going into the fourth quarter ? nor be tempted to let their equity allocations run up as their market value increases rather than paring the allocations back as part of a disciplined rebalancing practice.

You can look at rebalancing as a form of portfolio risk management. Let?s say you?ve set strategic asset allocations at 60% stocks, 30% bonds, and 10% commodities as part of an investment policy statement that reflects not only your desired exposure to systematic risk factors but also the risk and return goals of your portfolio. If you allow allocations to drift as asset prices fluctuate over time, however, the more volatile asset classes will tend to take over and increase portfolio risk ? hence, the need for periodic rebalancing.

Building a Better Portfolio
Implemented over extended periods, systematic rebalancing may improve a portfolio?s risk-adjusted returns quite substantially. For example, we looked at two portfolios comprising 60% stocks, 30% bonds, and 10% commodities from 1 January 1992 to 31 August 2012 (for this exercise, we used a portfolio allocated as follows: 60% S&P 500 Index, 30% five-year Treasuries, 10% Dow Jones-UBS Commodity Index).
We rebalanced the first portfolio each quarter and never rebalanced the second one. Result: The rebalanced portfolio returned 7.86% annualized, compared with 7.42% for the second one. Thanks to the power of compounding, a $100,000 investment in the rebalanced portfolio would have grown to $478,000, compared with only $439,000 in the case of no rebalancing, for an 11% greater profit. Rebalancing also reduced portfolio volatility quite dramatically, from 10.74% to 9.43% over the 20-year period. Overall, rebalancing resulted in a 21% improvement in the portfolio?s reward/risk ratio.

There are, of course, different methods and philosophies of rebalancing. For instance, calendar rebalancing calls for returning allocations to target weights on a periodic basis, such as quarterly or semi-annually. This is a fairly simple process that doesn?t require continuous monitoring of a portfolio, but the downside is that calendar rebalancing is unrelated to market behavior that may have moved allocations way out of whack since the last rebalancing.

Establishing Some Rules
Many investors follow a form of percentage-of-portfolio rebalancing whereby thresholds or trigger points for rebalancing are established. For instance, take the simple example of a 60/40 strategic allocation with a 5 percentage point rule. This approach results in a tolerance band or corridor of 55%?65% for stocks and 35%?45% for bonds. If stocks or bonds move out of those ranges, that would be the trigger to rebalance the entire portfolio. Another common technique is percentage of asset class ? for instance, using a 10% movement (say, from 40% to 36% or 44%) as the threshold to rebalance.

Regardless of what method you use, there are some basic guidelines to bear in mind. First, because transaction costs are incurred each time you rebalance to strategic allocation targets, you must determine whether the trade-off is worth it. All else being equal, it is better to set wider corridors for illiquid investments with high transaction costs, such as real estate and private equity. If the portfolio is in a taxable account, you?ll probably want to set wider bands than in a tax-deferred account. To help minimize transaction costs in the rebalancing process, consider using incoming cash deposits like 401(k) contributions or interest and dividend income generated by the portfolio.

Second, the higher the volatility of an asset class, the narrower the corridors should be. For example, commodities will typically have a tighter band than high-quality fixed income. And the higher the correlation of an asset class with the rest of the portfolio, the wider the optimal corridor. You should also note that for investors who seek exposure to certain risk factors within an asset class ? for instance, small cap versus large cap, value versus growth, or international versus domestic within equities ? it makes sense to drill down and set some rules for rebalancing risk factor exposures (with the caveat that, as with asset class rebalancing, such changes should be justified by the related transaction costs).

Finally, don?t forget to rebalance portfolios in your defined contribution retirement plan, such as a 401(k). In managing their own defined contribution accounts, investors seem prone to what is called status quo bias in behavioral finance. In other words, perhaps out of sheer inertia, some people take a ?set it and forget it? approach to their retirement portfolios, allowing allocations to drift until asset class weights and risk levels are way out of kilter. As one extreme example, consider the cost of riding equities (and tech stocks in particular) all the way until the market bubble burst in March 2000.

Conclusion
Periodic portfolio rebalancing is more than just a prudent risk management practice. Over time, it can increase portfolio returns and reduce risk. There are many ways to structure a rebalancing methodology, but the most important thing is that investors must have one ? and stick to it.

Team Romney: Biden was ?off balance? and ?strange?

Romney watching the VP debate (Shannon Stapleton/Reuters)

How confident was Team Romney heading into Thursday's vice presidential debate?

In an unusual move, the Romney campaign allowed a small pool of reporters into the Republican nominee's hotel room in Asheville, N.C., to witness Romney and his top aides watching the first few minutes of the debate between his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, and Vice President Joe Biden.

During Biden's response to the question about the Obama administration's handling of the attack on the United States consulate in Libya, Romney turned to his advisers and said, "Will Paul attack on this?"

Asked by a reporter for his response to Biden's answer, Romney laughed.

"I'm looking forward to the next answer," Romney said, adding "I think Paul will do great."

Indeed, the Romney campaign quickly declared victory in the aftermath of the VP debate, with one senior adviser pouncing on Biden's body language as "off balance," "out of kilter" and "strange."

"He found a way to be worse than Obama. He laughed his way through the debate, lectured the American people, lectured everybody," the Romney aide, who declined to be named, said. "He even lectured his home town that they should feel good that they have 10 percent unemployment."

Another Romney adviser looked forward to next week's debate between Romney and Obama.

"We expect that President Obama will try and avoid talking about his lack of a record to run on," the adviser, who declined to be named, said. "And, consistent with Biden's performance, we expect they won't talk about a second term agenda since they don't really have one other than raising taxes."

According to a spokesman, Romney phoned Ryan after the debate and congratulated him on a "fantastic" showing.

(AP) ? Authorities have shifted their focus from searching for a missing 10-year-old girl to appealing for help in tracking down her apparent kidnapper, as concern mounts in a Denver suburb where the girl disappeared a week ago and a body was found.

Police on Friday expect to positively identify a body found in a park seven miles from where Jessica Ridgeway went missing Oct. 5. Police have not linked the body to Jessica or even revealed if it belongs to a child. The body found at Pattridge Park in Arvada was "not intact," which has delayed identification, police said.

Notably missing Thursday were more appeals by authorities to spread word of Jessica's disappearance via social media. Instead, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit released a list of changes that a person committing a crime against a child would exhibit. Among them: sudden differences in appearance, missed appointments, being absent from work, or leaving town with no explanation.

"It could be your boss, it could be your friend, and ultimately it could be your family member," FBI spokesman Dave Joly said. "Bring this information to law enforcement and let us vet that to a close. If that person is not the suspect, 'Thank you for your call.' Next lead."

Joly said agents are searching for a man, based on statistics for this type of crime.

Retired FBI behavioral analyst Clinton Van Zandt told The Associated Press that some things to look out for include a person suddenly growing a beard, cutting their hair or doing other things to change their appearance. Other clues are activities that are out of character, such as a person who may have detailed their car when he normally would have only washed it, Van Zandt said.

Now, authorities just need somebody to have noticed and contact police, Van Zandt said.

As for the lack of information being released by authorities, it's part of the search for a suspect, Van Zandt said.

"Whoever is responsible would be watching this very closely," Van Zandt said, and procedure would be to release information "that will drive the offender one way or another."

Police have ruled out as suspect Jessica's parents ? Sarah Ridgeway, who lives in Colorado, and Jeremiah Bryant, who lives in Missouri ? and have said they believe Jessica was kidnapped by an "unknown suspect."

Jessica's mother last saw her daughter walking to a park in Westminster to meet friends to walk to school. The girl never arrived at school, setting off a frantic search by hundreds of law enforcement officials and residents.

Aurelio Florez, who has lived in Jessica's neighborhood for six years, said it was shocking that Jessica could have vanished during a two-block walk to a park.

"You can see the park from her front door," he said.

Fliers about the fifth-grader were posted on nearly every house in her neighborhood of modest, two-story homes with single-car garages. Purple ribbons, Jessica's favorite color and a symbol of hope for her return, were tied around trees.

It was a lively area where children played outdoors, said another neighbor, Luis Pena, but since Jessica disappeared, parents are keeping their children inside and people look at each other with suspicion.

"Nobody trusts anybody anymore," he said.

The only real clue police have revealed in Jessica's disappearance is the discovery over the weekend of a backpack and water bottle that she had with her when she disappeared. Police won't discuss what was found in the bag or test results on it.

The items were found in the town of Superior, some six miles from Jessica's home.

Additional police were sent to Jessica's school, said Lynn Setzer, spokeswoman for Jeffco Public Schools. The district has its own security officers at other middle schools and high schools.

Steve Saunders, a spokesman for nearby Adams County schools, said the district is trying to strike a balance between reassuring students and their parents that they are safe, while encouraging them to be vigilant.

Saunders said the district has security officers at all middle schools and high schools, but not elementary schools. He said the district will seek more help if authorities believe it is warranted.

ComScore: Google's Search Engine Market Share Increased In ...

ComScore just published its latest U.S. search market numbers and things aren?t looking too good for Yahoo. Yahoo?s Bing-powered search lost another 0.6 percentage points and now has just 12.2 percent of the market. That?s down from 12.8 percent in August and 13 percent in July and June.

The networks that apparently profited from Yahoo?s dip are Google, which added another 0.3 percentage points and Ask, which is also up 0.3 percentage points. With this, Google now commands 66.7 percent of the U.S. search market and Ask 3.5 percent.

Microsoft?s Bing held steady last month at 15.9 percent in comScore?s rankings. In total, comScore reports, Bing powered just over a quarter (25.1 percent) of all U.S. searches in September.

TechCrunch parent company AOL is still the smallest of comScore?s top 5 search engines and came in at 1.8 percent last month, up 0.1 percentage points from August.

As far as total search volume goes, comScore says about 16.3 billion searches were conducted in September. That?s down about 4 percent from last month. Unsurprisingly, Yahoo also saw the largest drop here. The total number of searches on the site decreased by 9 percent.

Yahoo?s Troubles Continue

So far, Yahoo?s new CEO Marissa Mayer hasn?t announced any changes to the company?s strategy in the search market. If Yahoo wants to stay relevant in this business, though, Mayer will have to make some changes and do so sooner rather than later. Search brings in about a third of Yahoo?s revenue, and given Mayer?s background in search, she will likely institute some changes soon. For the time being, though, her focus seems to be more on PB&J than on improving Yahoo?s search.

Tom Hanks to make his Broadway debut next year

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tom Hanks will play a gutsy New York City newspaper columnist when he makes his debut on Broadway in the spring.

Producers of Nora Ephron's play "Lucky Guy" announced Thursday that Hanks will play Mike McAlary in the stage biography. Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, had been in negotiations for the role when Ephron died this summer.

Previews begin March 1 at the Broadhurst Theatre and an opening night is set for April 1.

McAlary, the city's one-time dominant tabloid reporter, got the first interview with Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was sodomized and beaten by white police officers at a station house in 1997. McAlary would win the Pulitzer Prize the next year but would die of cancer a few months later at age 41.

The director of "Lucky Guy" will be George C. Wolfe.

In June, lead producer Colin Callender said his team could "think of no more fitting tribute to her extraordinary writing and remarkable body of work" than to proceed with plans to produce Ephron's play.

Hanks is the star of such films as "Splash," ''Forrest Gump," ''Philadelphia," ''Sleepless in Seattle," ''Apollo 13" and "Saving Private Ryan."

Ephron, who died June 26 at age 71, gained recognition as the writer of films such as "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," which starred Hanks.

McAlary, who worked at both the New York Daily News and The New York Post, has already been the subject of a play ? Dan Klores' "The Wood," which opened off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre last year. He was said to be the inspiration for the character played by Randy Quaid in Ron Howard's "The Paper."
